While most of us visiting Jaipur are more attracted towards the forts, the old city delights and the local cuisine delicacies, there is always an intrinsic desire to take with us a package of memories tied around a combination of local souvenirs dominated by handicrafts, jewellery and the city/country’s traditional wear.
Jaipur is home to a number of shopping markets, malls and “Bazaars”. The decision to be taken here by a traveler is really not as to what to buy, rather where to buy it from ?
To start with, your itinerary must definitely include the famous Johri Bazaar. Frequently referred to as Jaipur’s Shoppers’ Paradise, Johri (derived from hindi for Jewellery) Bazaar is the hub of gems and jewellery shops. You may also come across a large variety of traditional Sarees colourfully embroidered with stones & other forms of art & wedding Lehengas knit around an admirable Bandhej.
M.I. (Mirza Ismail) Road, the magnificent mile of Jaipur, is the second most preferred shopping area comprising of a perfect blend of modern branded shops like Levis, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste & Nike and the traditional and regional handicrafts, artefacts, antiques and jewellery shops. MI Road is considered a tourist favorite boasting of beautiful architecture and fort like structures depicting the richness of the city in terms of cuisines, industry, history & tapestry and is also home to some of the oldest Restaurants in Jaipur serving mouthwatering delicacies.
Bapu Bazaar is certainly a treasure for those of us looking for traditional Jaipuri Jutis, bedsheets, salwar suits & readymade suits. Of the entire lot, Bed sheets and suits are considered favorites by those visiting from outside Rajasthan owing to the diverse range of prints covering the cloth like bagru, sanganeri & batik prints. Not to forget, Bapu bazaar can also be chosen to window shop for decorative pieces and have a bite or two of some amazing Indian chaat like gol gappas, papdi chat, pao bhaji and more.
For the book freaks, Chauda Rasta is the place to be. Consisting of hundreds of book shops and vendors who deal with books of historic relevance to the science driven papers and suspense driven novels, Chauda Rasta offers every type of reading material you can possibly think of. A small tip here – pay a short visit to the extremely sought after Golcha theatre to catch up on a Bollywood movie and experience the real novelty surrounding the mainstream Jaipur.
Apart from the places already mentioned above, you may also pay a casual visit to the square shaped market of Badi chaupar overlooking the legendary Hawa mahal in the real pink area of this pink city. Badi chaupar is essentially the most crowded area of Jaipur irrespective of the time of the year or day. The best tip is to put on your bargaining hats and go home with more in less. You may choose from a range of Jaipur print material, furniture items, Rajasthani suits and bedsheets.
The ones looking to explore the modern side of Jaipur should definitely pay a visit to Malls like the World Trade Park, Pink Square and the ever popular Gaurav tower. World Trade Park is the latest addition to the malls of Jaipur and boasts of designer brand shops like Zara.
All in all Jaipur is a beautiful combination of various shopping destinations, catering to different tastes and offering various varieties of stuff to choose from. A heaven for everyone who believes in exploring a city through its markets 🙂
